Hair disorders, such as alopecia, are very frequent in Greek Islands. The objective of this study was to perform an analysis of the hair follicle morphology and to determine the differences between normal hair and of alopecia in our patients. We made a retrospective analysis of the histological slides of 1,145 patients who were referred to our laboratory, from 1998 to 2003, for suspected alopecia, and performed a systematic study of the hair follicles. The examination of the microscopic slides revealed a broad spectrum of abnormal conditions, including scarring alopecia, follicular dysplasia, pseudo-cortex, dissecting folliculitis, and hair regrowth. Our study showed that in all cases of progressive hair loss, we should perform a complete histological examination of the scalp, taking into account the main pathological conditions and their differential diagnosis.Neuroscientists have recently discovered that when mice are exposed to a certain type of low-frequency sound, their entire body shakes. This in turn helps the mice escape from danger.
Even though the information about the sound's function was derived from studies conducted using mice, researchers believe that the mice's ability to detect and respond to the sound in the environment also applies to humans.
Shake Your Body to Escape From Danger?
Dr. Hrafn Stefansson and his colleagues from the University of Iceland found that when they exposed mice to a frequency band of 1.5-5 Hz, or "Shake to Shake" sounds, they would instinctively shake their bodies. The sound was first tested on rats, but later on, when the team replaced the rats with mice, they found that the mice reacted to the same sound.
"It was a very exciting moment when we were first able to record the innate response in mice," says Dr. Stefansson, one of the first researchers to study the phenomenon. He continues, "It's an incredible response that involves moving the whole body at a certain frequency. We started thinking, what kind of organisms could respond in this way? We started to explore the behavioral characteristics of sound, and it was only then that we found that humans and other animals are also sensitive to this kind of low frequency sound."
