Gigantic churches are the norm today. As people become better educated and wiser, they find more meaning in being active in a church or group with which they identify.
As the world is becoming ever more complex, as individuals are busier than ever, and as the cultural conversations we all have are all around us, people are finding meaning in being with others and supporting the less-fortunate around us.
A church, however, is meant to be a counter-cultural place, not the norm. Though many today become part of a congregation that really does keep the lights on, there is a certain irony in that irony, since that’s not what the Scriptures say should be done.
Since the church is a local body of believers, it is impossible for it to remain the same. I would argue that those of us who remain in a local church and take the journey with Christ each week should expect it to change, and that it will be challenged to see the world as it is and not as it thinks it is.
So, while the church of yesterday might be called by another name, it is still the same church. It still has much to learn and to teach.
It is a body that’s always on the move and it moves towards the kingdom.
Those who follow the way to glory will be among us.
But as we search for that higher glory, it is also a time to come to know ourselves and where we are in the spiritual journey.
